MountainView program helps fight hunger in Doña Ana County
MountainView Regional Medical Center has launched its 4th Annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, collecting peanut butter and other nut butters throughout March to support families facing food insecurity.
The drive began March 1 and will continue through March 31, with donations benefiting families served by Casa de Peregrinos Emergency Food Program throughout Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.
Each year, MountainView employees and community members come together to support the effort. In 2025, the drive collected 4,703 jars of peanut butter, and organizers hope to exceed that total this year. The impact of the initiative has grown year after year, and MountainView is excited to see what our community can accomplish together in 2026.
“Every year, MountainView makes it a priority to give back to our community, and Jars of Love is one of our favorite ways to show that we care,” said Patrick Shannon, CEO of MountainView Regional Medical Center. “Casa de Peregrinos is working to address hunger in our area, and we are proud to support their efforts one jar of peanut butter at a time.”
“Jars of Love has become a favorite event for this community, bringing in thousands of jars of peanut butter for us to distribute to families in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County,” said Lorenzo Alba Jr., executive director of Casa de Peregrinos. “Peanut butter is a great source of protein, especially for families with children, and we’re grateful for the support MountainView shows for our mission.”
According to Casa de Peregrinos, nearly one in six residents in the region experience food insecurity. Peanut butter is especially valuable for food banks because it is nutrient-dense and shelf-stable, making it easy for families to use in everyday meals. However, despite its nutritional value and long shelf life, peanut butter is often in short supply at food banks, making community drives like Jars of Love especially important.
Community members can donate jars of peanut butter (plastic jars only) at the MountainView hospital lobby or at any of the Walmart locations throughout Las Cruces. Online donations for the Peanut Butter Drive can also be made at Casadeperegrinos.org.
Local businesses are also encouraged to join the effort by encouraging their employees and customers to donate jars of peanut butter. Collections will be picked up at the end of the month.
MountainView invites the community to take part in the drive and help make a difference for families facing hunger in our community.
