Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine
Overview
Osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) is a specialty that focuses on the application of the osteopathic concept to patient care. It is also an interdisciplinary field that incorporates elements of general medicine, neurology, orthopedics, rheumatology, sports medicine and radiology. Central to discipline is osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) that, when specifically applied, will augment the patient's physiology in a predictable manner. By combining both an osteopathic perspective and OMT, the specialist is poised to tackle a variety of elusive diagnoses with confidence as well as function in a general practice environment.
Mission Statement
The ONMM residency program is designed to prepare residents for 'life after residency' as an attending physician. Base rotations, coupled with specific one on one tailoring of the training program to suit each resident's future professional goals, makes this program truly unique.
Increasing responsibilities throughout the program, both clinically and academically, ensure the proper acquisition of time management skills that are essential for success as an attending physician. Daily inpatient consults/rounds with same day outpatient clinic responsibilities prepare residents for the realities of practicing full scope ONMM specialist medicine.
Program Aims
The aim of our program is simple: to train skilled, competent osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine specialists that will also be well-rounded general practice physicians. We accomplish this using a four prong approach:
- Core program requirements provide competence in general osteopathic medicine
- Monthly resident mentoring identifies any issues and addresses them
- Low resident to attending ratios during continuity of care clinic provides quality precepting
- Highly structured weekly didactics provides excellent board preparation
Upon completion of the program, residents are prepared to practice comfortably in both academic and clinical settings.
Curriculum
The PGY-1 year curriculum emphasizes general osteopathic medicine and fundamental clinical skills which are the foundation of the highly focused program core in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years.
Core program highlights include:
