Osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) is a primary care specialty that focuses on the application of the osteopathic concept to patient care. It is also an interdisciplinary field that incorporates elements of general medicine, neurology, orthopedics, rheumatology, sports medicine and radiology. Central to discipline are the manual osteopathic skills (OMT) that, when specifically applied, will augment the patient’s physiology in a predictable manner. By combining both an osteopathic perspective and OMT, the specialist is poised to tackle a variety of elusive diagnoses with confidence as well as function in a general practice environment.
The MountainView Regional Medical Center osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) is an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved program that is based out of a dually accredited AOA/Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) institution. Having acquired ACGME institutional accreditation on April 27, 2016, our program is beginning the process of applying for ACGME program accreditation in order for us to be fully prepared for the 2020 GME merger.
This program is designed to prepare the resident for “life after residency” as an attending physician. Daily inpatient consults/rounds and same day outpatient clinic responsibilities prepare the resident for the realities of practicing a full scope ONMM specialist medicine. The resident will be assigned increasing responsibilities both clinically and academically as they progress from PGY 1 to PGY 3. This will ensure the proper acquisition of time management skills that are essential for success as an attending physician.
The goal of our program is simple: to train skilled, competent osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine specialists that will also be well-rounded general practice physicians. We will accomplish this using a four prong approach:
- The core program requirements will provide competence in general osteopathic medicine.
- Monthly resident mentoring will identify any issues and address them.
- A low attending to resident ratio during continuity of care clinic will provide quality preceptorship.
- Highly structured weekly didactics will provide excellent board preparation.
Upon completion of the program, the resident will be comfortable in both academic and clinical settings. I invite you to follow the associated link to our detailed curriculum. Our base rotations, coupled with specific one on one tailoring of the program, to suit each resident’s future professional goals, makes this program truly unique.
The PGY1 year curriculum will emphasize general osteopathic medicine and serve as the foundation for the highly focused PGY2-3 curriculum years. Osteopathic principles and philosophy will be carefully woven through the following core program highlights:
- Daily inpatient service at MountainView Regional Medical Center (MVRMC);
- Weekly anatomy and physiology discussion;
- Weekly continuity clinic case discussions;
- Weekly core reading assignments (osteopathic medicine and osteopathic philosophy) with assessment;
- Weekly imaging case discussions (x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound);
- Journal club;
- Weekly osteopathic manipulative treatment technique review laboratory with an attending physician;
- Service and community outreach projects; and,
- Special procedure workshops (injections including prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma, splinting, suturing and musculoskeletal ultrasound training)
The teaching faculty provides inpatient medical services at MountainView Regional Medical Center as well as outpatient medical services in the surrounding community. The program also has a close affiliation with The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) and the resident will have access to various resources, including access to the BCOM library and the residents’ Continuity of Care Clinic, which is located at the college.
