Palliative Care Now Available at MountainView Regional Medical Center
1/17/2017
Las Cruces, NM – January 10, 2017 – MountainView Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce a new palliative care program to better serve our patients and the community. Palliative means to ease, and the focus of this new program is to ease the suffering that results from illness. The main goal of palliative care is to relieve the patient’s pain and other discomfort and to reduce their loved one’s stress. Palliative care is not hospice, but includes treatments for a patient’s symptoms, even when the underlying disease cannot be cured. This additional resource will be used during those times that our seriously ill patients and their families need a little extra support. Patients can receive palliative care at any time during their hospital stay and can receive other medical treatment as well. This care is appropriate at any age and for any stage in a serious treatment, whether or not it is considered life-threatening.
“We know that being in the hospital is a stressful time for both patients and their families, even when the hospital stay is related to something minor. When patients are here for something more serious, or have long-term health issues that may call for more complex care, it puts even more pressure on patients and families,” said Denten Park, CEO. “Creating a palliative care program is our way to provide more support and resources to those patients. Palliative care is the right thing to do for our community.”
The palliative care team will include the physicians involved in the patient’s care, nurses, case managers and pharmacists on MountainView’s staff. This team is available to serve as an additional resource to discuss and establish goals for care, help with advance care planning and advance directives, and can assist with complex pain and symptom management. Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover palliative care services. Check with your provider for specifics. For assistance with this program, please call (575) 556-7585.
