New Technology for Uterine Fibroids

Dr. Reddy Moolamalla at MountainView Medical Group is the first in New Mexico and West Texas to offer a new outpatient treatment procedure for women suffering from debilitating symptoms caused by uterine fibroids. The treatment, called radiofrequency ablation of fibroids, is an outpatient procedure that destroys fibroid tissue using a thin needle. It uses controlled radiofrequency energy and heat to ablate the fibroid.
Fibroids are benign growths in or around the uterus. They are very common in women of child-bearing age and can range in size from a grape to a grapefruit. Nearly 3 out of 4 women in the United States will have uterine fibroids before the age of 50. Not all fibroids require treatment, but symptoms often include heavy menstrual bleeding and painful periods that interfere with daily activities. These symptoms may worsen over time if left untreated. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 200,000 women each year are treated for uterine fibroids with the most common and surgical solution, a hysterectomy. This procedure is a new alternative for this condition that addresses the growing preference of doctors and women seeking a less-invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and minimizes treatment recovery time. Dr. Reddy Moolamalla is now offering this incision-free outpatient procedure that may be performed without general anesthesia. Miniaturized ultrasound locates the fibroids and then treats them from inside the uterus. In a clinical trial, the treatment was proven to reduce symptoms while getting half of the treated women back to their normal activities the next day. Average return to activity was two days.
“My patients have been waiting and suffering, sometimes for years, to seek treatment for their fibroids.” says Dr. Moolamalla. “Women want to avoid surgical procedures that remove any part of their uterus or require lengthy recoveries.”
Dr. Moolamalla is chief of perinatal services at MountainView Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces. His practice is Advanced OB GYN and he is accepting new patients. For more information or to schedule a consultation call (575) 556-3252.
