8/2/2019
Looking to make some changes in your life? How about an exercise program to keep you moving and learn new things at a reasonable price? Or a place to play Scrabble and Pinochle and meet new friends? MountainView Regional Medical Center’s Senior Amigos keeps senior citizens physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. Its mission is to encourage a healthy lifestyle for seniors by providing programs that encourage continued learning, wellness, health and volunteering, coupled with a host of social activities. The goal is to keep you OUT of the hospital.
Senior Amigos offers more than 40 exercise programs, including eight different yoga classes, meditation, tai-chi, Zumba, dancercise, line dancing, cardio and core workouts. Classes range in fitness levels from easy, seated movements to difficult aerobics. All courses are designed to be taken at your own pace with qualified instructors to help with modifications.
Senior Amigos hosts a monthly luncheon with a full-course meal, including salad and dessert. They screen movies with a light snack at noon on Fridays. Check out the book club or bingo which meet monthly. Weekly offerings include a photography workshop; an American West history course which focuses on Las Cruces and New Mexico; beginning and intermediate Spanish classes; a writing workshop; and a knitting and crocheting circle. There are several groups that play games including American and Chinese Mahjong, canasta, and chess to name a few.
As a service of MountainView, Senior Amigos hosts presentations on everything from getting tech savvy to fall prevention. MountainView’s highly trained healthcare providers visit regularly to share their latest procedures. New providers come to introduce themselves and their specialties. There are nutritional experts who teach about healthy foods to eat, proper skin care for the desert and making good choices at the grocery store. There are opportunities to learn about specific senior issues, travel excursions in the area, and easy crafting.
Senior Amigos welcomes everyone age 50 or better desiring social, physical and mental engagement. If you would like more information on how to participate in Senior Amigos, please call (575) 522-0502 or stop by 3948 E. Lohman Ave., behind Walgreens.
