3D Mammography
3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) creates levels of images through the breast tissue much like a CAT scan. While 3D mammography provides the most detailed breast imaging for all women, it is especially important to women with dense breast tissue, allowing physicians to examine breast tissue layer by layer. Due to the detail of these images, 3D mammography can reduce stressful call backs for repeat screenings. More importantly, 3D mammography can increase the early detection of invasive cancer.
Benefits of 3D mammography can include:
- Improved accuracy of screening exams, especially for women with dense breast tissue
- Overcoming some of the limitations of standard mammography, such as overlapping breast tissue
- Greater image quality, reducing the need for repeat imaging
For women of average risk, the American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. Different guidelines apply to women at higher risk. Ask your doctor if a 3D mammogram is right for you.
Breast Ultrasound
Ultrasound can provide a different view of questionable areas seen on mammography and allows doctors to see the area closest to the chest wall. This technology also helps doctors determine whether a breast lump is filled with fluid (a cyst) or is a solid mass and could be evidence of breast cancer.
Image-Guided Breast Biopsy
If your mammogram shows an area of concern, we offer ultrasound-guided or stereotactic biopsy. When a lump or abnormal area is detected during screening, a biopsy can determine whether cells are cancerous. Advanced imaging technology combined with minimally invasive techniques to obtain tissue samples allows your doctor to make an accurate and timely diagnosis.
Bone Density
A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis, a disorder characterized by bones that are more fragile or prone to breaking easily. The test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. Your doctor can order a bone density test to identify decreases in bone density before you break a bone, to determine your risk of broken bones (fractures), to confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis and to monitor osteoporosis treatment.
